The challenge of the brief was to design an architectural destination that celebrates the unique site of Lumsdale Valley and welcomes all kinds of visitors. The spaces to be included in the design consist of a reception, exhibition space, education room, office and storage spaces, and a small café with a kitchen and toilet facilities.

Sensitive Design

The new architectural proposal comprises four clearly separated buildings to minimize the intrusion into the sensitive landscape. The space between the buildings is carefully designed to integrate them with the surrounding environment. Considerations were made to ensure that people have both flexibility and guidance while moving to, through and between the spaces, and that the site is inviting for visitors even when the buildings themselves are closed.

Environmental Strategies

The buildings were positioned according to yearly sun patterns to optimise solar gain which is quite limited due to tree density. Underground tanks collect rainwater and green roofs were integrated to atone for the land used for the buildings. Stabilised rammed earth was chosen as the main building material. It is a natural, load bearing material with high thermal mass and good sound insulation properties. Its resistance to fire, longevity and natural stone appearance made it an attractive choice for the site.
