Flo Skatepark
Skatepark Nottingham, UK • 2nd Year Project (2019)

The project site - the Great Northern Warehouse in Nottingham - is a Grade II Listed building valued for its historical significance and architectural importance. The challenge of the brief was to preserve the remaining, unused structure and transform it into a functional and attractive location, more precisely into a skatepark.

Project stage 1 - TEMPORARY INTERVENTION

The first part of the project was to create a scheme for a temporary intervention. This is integrated within a structural scaffolding structure which also supports and strengthens the ruins. An open-plan, roofless proposal offer skateboarding facilities while keeping the construction and maintenance costs to a minimum.

Project Stage 2 - BUILDING DESIGN & SITE STRATEGY

Concept of INTERLOCKING. In skateboarding, all human body parts work together to perform well and, therefore, coordination and balance are the keys to success. Every skateboarder's move reflects geometry. Interlocking lines reach for equilibrium making it possible to perform as a whole. In the building design, different spaces interact with each other making a clear separation between skateboarding and other facilities but at the same time providing smooth and clear circulation paths.
